In 2021, the Centers for Disease Control declared racism a serious threat to public health. For people of color with disabilities, the threat is dire – they face multiple barriers to health care.
Unique Royster is a young Black woman with a disability. She and her mother Irene Kelley faced disparities in accessing health care when Unique needed surgery, leaving them frustrated.
Irene is demanding the fair treatment of people with disabilities in health care and in society.
“Make room for my child because she deserves to be here just as much as you do,” said Irene. “I want a world who accepts her for who she is and can appreciate her gifts.”
